Three Faiths, One City – A Spiritual Journey Through Time
Step out of Alexandria and into the heart of Cairo’s timeless soul—a city where the echoes of ancient prayers still resonate through stone walls and sacred streets. This unforgettable day tour invites you to walk through centuries of faith, culture, and coexistence, discovering how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have shaped the spirit of Old Cairo.
Our journey begins with a visit to the Hanging Church (Church of the Virgin Mary), (Al-Muallaqa), named for its unique position above a Roman fortress gate. Inside, you’ll marvel at its wooden roof, designed to resemble Noah’s Ark, along with beautiful icons and mosaics that tell the story of faith in Egypt. Hanging Church has stood for centuries as a symbol of the Coptic Christian community’s resilience and dedication. The architecture, with its suspended nave and intricate woodwork, is awe-inspiring and offers a profound look into Coptic design and devotion.
Next, we’ll step into the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, a sacred site steeped in legend. Tradition holds that the Holy Family—Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus—once took refuge here during their flight into Egypt. Walking through this historic sanctuary, one can almost feel the echoes of ancient footsteps and appreciate the reverence that has surrounded this place for centuries. Then the Greek Orthodox Monastery and Church of St George.
A short stroll will then lead us to Ben Ezra Synagogue, a spiritual cornerstone for Cairo’s once-thriving Jewish community. Though its origins date back to the 9th century, Ben Ezra has served as a symbol of harmony among faiths. Ben Ezra Synagogue is not only a beautiful structure but also a repository of priceless historical manuscripts, including the famed Cairo Geniza.
Finally, we reach the Coptic Museum, a hidden gem preserving Egypt’s Christian heritage in extraordinary detail. As we explore its treasures—iconic frescoes, carved stones, and an extensive collection of Coptic art—we’ll gain insight into Egypt’s ancient Christian era, a period often overshadowed by the grandeur of the pharaonic and Islamic periods. The Coptic Museum’s exhibits beautifully trace the evolution of Coptic art, bridging Egypt’s rich Christian heritage with its modern cultural landscape.
From there, our path leads to Islamic Cairo, where we visit the revered Mosque of Amr Ibn El-Aas, the first mosque built in Africa, established in 641 AD. Simple in design but monumental in importance, this mosque represents the foundation of Islamic civilization in Egypt and a key chapter in the story of the city.
After you enjoy your Day tour in Cairo, Have a delicious lunch at local restaurant.
